 Phils Pizza Oven
Anyone that knows me knows I LOVE food… I’m a fair cook and like to turn my hand to pretty much any cuisine.  I have a particular fondness for breads and of course Italian food is one of my favourite varieties.
Somehow I got it in my head to build a traditional, wood-fired masonry oven in the back yard.  I researched the subject on the net and bought a couple of books. In my typical obsessive fashion I modelled the oven in 3D on the computer, every block and brick, till I was satisfied that I fully understood it. (Or was it an attempt to forestall the inevitable physical labour?)
I began work in December 05 and gradually transformed a pile of concrete blocks and firebricks into a monolithic structure in the back corner of our section. I took the entire summer and most of the autumn to get it to the stage you see here.
And it works…! The pizza is to die for. Crispy thin bases, bubbling cheesy toppings, perfectly cooked within 2-3 minutes. The oven gets hot, really hot, after a couple of hours of firing. And it stays hot. I can do a pizza lunch for 30 people, roast lamb and vegetables for our family dinner and slow-cook a casserole the following day all off a mornings firing.
