Mike is a world-class hairdresser, with many international awards. He now operates from his new Ginger Meggs salon in Ballantynes Contemporary Lounge. His brief to me was for a salon that was “smooth, slick, clean and retro”. Functionally it had to be easy to work in, low on clutter and be able to display a lot of Mike’s hair product range. The images show the resulting design with a limited (black & white) palette, smooth lines, and rounded rectangular forms with product displayed everywhere. Since this project was done Mike has asked me to extend the salon providing space for more workstations and an updated, “more glamorous” look. I have included a couple of concept images to show this new direction, currently under development!It has been a great experience working with such a talented client who never stands still or rests on his achievements. They wanted something colourful and interesting that inspired play and exploration. My answer was to model a space that is a cross between a bookstore and a playground. There are cavities and spaces that kids can explore, a multi level “reading tunnel” that they can climb in and the central displays double as play pens with a void in the middle. The palette is white with primary highlights and the branding is finished off with colourful cartoon bug characters. The site available to him was on a raised courtyard serving as a walkway between large office buildings. The site was long and narrow and the design had to allow for uninterrupted pedestrian traffic. The environment is challenging with summer temperatures reaching 45 degrees C. We opted for a fully insulated and double glazed structure with a steel frame. The kiosk can be sealed off against the elements to allow the AC to work. Our aim has been to create a coherent range with a strong brand identity. Beginning with rough, quick pen sketches, the most promising variants were then accurately modelled on the computer in a 3D CAD program and further refined. After client scrutiny CAD files were provided for the development of prototypes. Several of these designs have now been released and sales are good.
